Excess moisture can easily damage delicate items and furniture such as old books and antiques. This is why if you are planning to store such items in a storage unit, you would need to make sure that you would be able to control and maintain the humidity level of the unit to a level which would preserve their condition.

One of the things that you can do when storing delicate items in storage unit facilities would be to install a device called a relative humidity gauge. This would allow you to monitor the amount of humidity in the unit. The EPA or the Environmental Protection Agency recommends the relative humidity to be lower than 50 percent to make sure that delicate items like paper documents and files, musical instruments, mattresses and electronic items would be properly preserved.

You can also place small containers with some silica gel or another type of moisture-absorbing chemical or substance inside the unit. Silica gel is not expensive and is readily available in most grocery and chemical supply stores. This option, however, is only advisable if your storage unit is enclosed and does not have windows because if the unit you have has windows, the silica gel can just draw in even more moisture from the outside.

Another cheap way of regulating the humidity level inside your unit would be through installing an electric light fixture in the unit, particularly if the unit you are renting has access to electricity. Doing this could help in drying the air and in effectively preventing the growth of mold and mildew which cause damage to your items.

You may also want to consider renting a climate controlled unit, which would allow you to make sure that the temperature and humidity level of the unit would keep your items in good condition. You need to note, however, that Jacksonville climate controlled storage units and climate controlled storage units in other states may cost more to rent than regular storage units because of the electricity that is needed to maintain them. However, if the items you need to store are valuable, then the cost of the climate controlled storage would certainly be nothing compared to the peace of mind you would be having that your valuables are in good hands.
